World’s Sweetest Tomato?
There’s no denying the health benefits of tomato, but not everyone likes their taste. Now, a new sweet tomato is being introduced that could change all that. Get the full story.
There’s no denying the health benefits of tomatoes, but not everyone appreciates their taste. For some people raw tomatoes have an acidic taste which keeps them from enjoying this ripe, red all-American fruit that comes in almost 7500 varieties. Of course, those who don’t enjoy the taste are depriving themselves of the many health benefits tomatoes have to offer. But, this could all change in the near future. Two new types of tomatoes have just made their debut in the United Kingdom, and these tomatoes could convert even the most ardent tomato haters into lovers. One, in particular, should be well received – a super sweet tomato without the sour, acidic tones that turn some people off.
A Super Sweet Tomato?
The most interesting of the two types of hybrid tomatoes being introduced is the Sugardrop tomato. The taste of this tomato has been compared to that of a peach. Not only is this tomato sweeter than the average, they’re also smaller – about the size of a cherry tomato. Producers are hoping this special tomato will be popular among children who don’t appreciate the taste of conventional tomatoes.
One disadvantage with this new type of tomato from a health standpoint is the higher sugar content. Developing this breed of super sweet tomato took two years of selective cross-breeding using over 3,000 different types of plants. Breeders have also developed another type of tomato called the Moruno that has a richly aromatic flavor with fewer seeds than ordinary tomatoes.
The Health Benefits of Tomato
The health benefits of tomato stem primarily from its high lycopene content. Lycopene is a cartenoid and strong antioxidant that’s being studied for its role in cancer prevention as well as its positive effects on the heart. Lycopenes have also been associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration of the eyes – the most common cause of age-related visual loss. Some studies looking at lycopene and cancer have shown conflicting results, although a diet rich in tomatoes, as a whole, seem to be associated with a lower risk of developing certain types of cancer.
How to Get the Health Benefits of Tomato
Many experts believe to get the benefits of lycopene it’s best if it comes from food sources such as tomatoes since natural foods have other phytochemicals that enhance the health benefits. The lycopenes are more easily used by the body when tomatoes are processed before being eaten. This means eating ketchup, salsa, and tomato sauce is better than eating raw tomatoes when it comes to lycopene content. Tomatoes are also an excellent source of the antioxidant vitamins – vitamins A and C.
If you’re lucky enough to live in the United Kingdom, you may soon have the chance to taste this new super sweet tomato. Hopefully, it will soon be available in the United States so more people, particularly children, can get the wonderful health benefits of a sweet, juicy, vine ripe tomato.
